Ducati Monster 1200 S Maintenance Schedule (2014-2016)

This is the Ducati Monster 1200 S maintenance schedule and service intervals — sourced from the owner’s manual, parts diagrams, and the service manuals.

This applies to every model since the launch of the Ducati Monster 1200 S made from 2014-2016 (before the IMU upgrade).

The Ducati Monster 1200 S, as with the base model 2014-2016 Ducati Monster 1200, has always been based around an 1198 cc “Testrastretta 11-degree” liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin motor. It has dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder with desmodromic actuation.

In the original 2014-2016 Ducati Monster 1200 S, the engine made peak power of 100 kW (135 hp) at 8750 rpm, and 118 Nm (87 ft-lb) fo torque at 7250 rpm. This engine was shared with the original Ducati Monster 1200.

The Ducati Monster 1200 S was significantly upgraded from the Monster 1200 in terms of ride gear. The 1200 S got

  • 48mm Öhlins fully adjustable forks
  • A fully-adjustable Öhlins rear shock
  • Lighter 3-spoke wheels
  • Larger Brembo M50 brakes
  • Other lightweight carbon fibre components

The Ducati Monster 1200 R was as with the S, but with a tweaked engine producing 9 more kW (15 more hp) of power

In 2017, Ducati updated the Monster 1200 S, giving it more power, more electronics, and more up-to-date emissions compliance.

Ducati Monster 1200 S Service Intervals

One of the benefits of the liquid-cooled Testastretta-11 engine in the Ducati Monster 1200 over the earlier Ducati Monster 1100 S is the longer service intervals.

The service interval for the Monster 1200 is every 9000 miles / 15000 km or every year. At every service, change the oil and oil filter, and look over the maintenance schedule for things to lubricate, clean, or otherwise check.

You only have to check/adjust the valve clearance every 30000 miles / 18000 kms. You also have to change the timing belts — or every five years, whichever comes sooner.

The Monster 1200 has a hydraulic clutch, so make sure to replace the fluid when you do the brake fluid. Alsom keep the coolant fresh.

What you need to service the Ducati Monster 1200 S (2014-2016)

When servicing your Ducati Monster 1200 S, you need the following spare parts and consumables.

Most of these are common to the base model Ducati Monster 1200, but some are different.

OilDucati recommends Shell Advance 4T Ultra 15W-50 motorcycle oil the Monster 1200, or alternatively “motorcycle engine oil having the same degree SAE 15W-50 and meeting the following specifications JASO: MA2 and API: SM”.

Oil filterGenuine Ducati part is 44440038A for the Ducati Monster 1200. You can also use a Hiflofiltro HF153RC oil filter which can be changed with a normal wrench.
Brake fluid, Clutch fluidDucati recommends Shell Advance DOT 4, or another high-grade synthetic brake/clutch fluid like Castrol DOT 4 Synthetic.
CoolantDucati recommends ENI Bike S (formerly known as Agip), an ethylene glycol-based coolant that’s silicate, phosphate, nitrate, borate, and amine free. An alternative Motorex M3.0.
Timing beltRemember to change that timing belt! Part number is 73740252A.
Front brake padsOEM part number is 61340961A (for one pair) or EBC FA447HH. Note these parts are unique to the S.
Rear brake padsOEM part number for the rear pads is 61340951A. You can also use EBC FA266HH for more bite and less fade as you apply pressure.
Air filterAir filter part number is 42610191A. You can also use K&N part DU-1006.
Spark plugsNGK code MAR9-J. Note it’s a twin spark motor — two per head.
Fork oilDucati wants you to periodically change the fork oil. Recommended fork oil is Shell Advance Fork 7.5 or Shell Donax TA, which you can get from your dealer.
Chain maintenanceKeep your chain clean and lubed with a Motul chain care kit.

Regular maintenance for the Ducati Monster 1200 S

This is the regular maintenance for the Monster 1200 S (that you can mostly do yourself).

Every 600 miles or 1000 kms OR 6 months (whichever is earlier), do the following:

This maintenance schedule for the Ducati Monster 1200 S is in the same format as in the manual.

The regular service intervals for the Ducati Monster 1200 S are every 9000 miles or 15000 km, at which you should change the oil and filter.

The banner update for the 2014 Monster 1200 S is that you only have to check/adjust the valve clearance every 30,000 kms, and you only have to change the timing belts at the same interval — or every five years. Less checking valves and belts means more time riding (and lower maintenance cost).

About the Ducati Monster 1200 S

Ducati announced the 2014 Ducati Monster 1200 S alongside the original Ducati Monster for contrast.

It still has the original spirit of the Ducati Monster — a naked streetfighter (but not a Ducati Streetfighter!) with a big engine stuck into a road-going chassis with handlebars.

Like other big street bikes — like the Triumph Street Triple R for example — the Ducati Monster 1200 S can also be a serious track day bike.

The core of the Monster 1200 S is the same as the base model Ducati Monster 1200. It’s based on an 1198 cc liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin. In base trim it puts out 101 kW (135 hp) of power, peaking at a very accessible 8750 rpm.

But the ride components of the S model are what differentiate it from the base model.

Comparing specs of the 2014-2016 Ducati Monster 1200 and 1200 S

Those details may not seem like a lot, particularly as the base model Ducati Monster 1200 is so capable — for example, the base model already has fully adjustable forks.

The net effect is only discernible in aggressive riding. The improved forks means that the bike is more quick to settle after shocks (e.g. cornering, or harsh bumps), and the improved brakes means that you have stopping power for extended periods, e.g. long days at the track.

The long-term benefit of the 1200 S is that it will always be a more desirable collector.

But both bikes are very capable on the street.
