Honda Rebel 300 (CMX300) Maintenance Schedule

This is the maintenance schedule and associated service intervals for the Honda Rebel 300, replacing the earlier Honda R ebel 250. The Rebel 300 is also known as the Honda CMX300.

The Honda Rebel 300 is an entry-level cruiser, the little sibling to the Honda Rebel 500, and very little sibling to the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100. It has a 286cc four-stroke liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine which powers the rear wheel through a six-speed transmission and a chain drive.

The Rebel 300 is a very accessible bike. It has a very low 690mm (27.2 inch) seat height, and modest powerband that will get you going around town but will be singing a little high on the highway. It’ll cruise quite happily at 120 km/h or 75 mph on a flat, which isn’t bad for a little single!

Service Intervals for the Honda Rebel 300 / CMX300

Servicing the Rebel 300 is cheap and easy, with wide 8000 mile / 12800 km service intervals and only one cylinder to work on. So change the oil every 8000 miles or 12800 km.

Inspect the Rebel 300’s valve clearances — all four of them, on the one cylinder — every 16000 miles or 25600 km (every two oil changes). Change the spark plug at the same time you check the valve clearances.

It’s basically a naked bike, so everything’s there for you to see and work on.

As the Rebel 300 has a liquid-cooled engine, make sure to keep the coolant up to date.

What you need to service the Honda Rebel 300

Aside from basic motorcycle maintenance tools, here’s what you need to service your Honda Rebel 300.

Oil	Honda recommends SAE 10W-30, JASO T 903 standard MA, such as Pro Honda GN4 10W-30. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
Oil filter	Use Hiflofiltro HF103 for the oil filter as a high-quality drop-in replacement (People prefer Hiflofiltro to K&N in recent years for oil filters).
Air filter	You can use the K&N air filter as an easy-to-find replacement. Part number is K&N HA-2513.
Spark plugs	Use NGK spark plug part SIMR8A9.
Chain maintenance	To maintain your chain, Motul chain paste is quite well-liked. There’s also the Motul chain care kit which is affordable and good (it includes a brush, gloves, and cleaning solution)
Brake fluid	You can use any fluid, but Honda recommends Honda DOT 4.
Brake pads (front)	EBC double-hardened front brake pads have part number FA196HH.
Brake pads (rear)	EBC double-hardened rear brake pads have part number FA496HH.
Coolant	Use Zerex G05, which is based on ethylene glycol, with corrosion inhibitors
Grease	Stock up on lithium soap-based grease and silicon grease to keep pivots and moving parts lubricated and protected.

The Honda Rebel 300 is a classically styled and practical cruiser, but with modern style elements and technology.

The Rebel 300 is based on a 286 cc liquid-cooled 20-degree single-cylinder four-stroke engine with four valves in its one cylinder. It runs a very modest 10.7:1 compression ratio, and the engine is of course fuel injected. You might recognise this engine from other “300” motorcycles from Honda, like the Honda CBR300R — same engine, but in a much sportier-looking package.

The Honda Rebel 300 is a great entry-level bike, not just because of its modest power, but also because it has very low cost of ownership. It gently sips fuel and all the components — tyres, brake pads/rotors, and engine components — are low-cost. Maintenance is infrequent and easy.

Unlike many affordable bikes, the Rebel 300 has quite wide maintenance intervals. It’ll take a long time until you get to the first valve service — and it’ll be a doddle, and cheap to do. You won’t have to check the valves until 16000 miles or 25600 km, and the job itself is less than two hours labor (maybe an hour for the experienced mechanic).

Honestly every time I see a Rebel 300 or 500 I think to myself: Why aren’t I riding one of these?

The Rebel 300 puts power down via a six-speed transmission and a chain final drive. It’s geared very low — you’ll be out of first gear in no time!

The Rebel 300, like the 500, comes with optional ABS — though has been standard in many parts of the world.

Honda kept the Rebel 300 effectively the same every year since its launch, making only minor tweaks to things like suspension, and changing the colours/graphics, none of which affects maintenance.
