The Prius 5th gen XW60 is built on Toyota’s second-generation TNGA-C platform and uses the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5). The Prius 5th gen XW60 marks a clear turning point for Toyota’s best-known hybrid. This generation keeps the Prius formula intact but finally feels like a modern, cohesive car rather than a science project with license plates. It is still a dedicated hybrid liftback, but now one that makes sense alongside mainstream compact sedans and hatchbacks rather than sitting apart from them.

At the core of the XW60 is Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system paired with the M20A-FXS 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine. This is a meaningful step up from the previous 1.8-liter setup.

The Prius 5th gen XW60 sits on Toyota’s second-generation TNGA-C platform, giving it a lower center of gravity and a noticeably stiffer structure than the 4th gen model. Compared to a Corolla Hybrid, it feels wider, more planted, and more settled at highway speeds. It is not a sports sedan, but the chassis now feels composed rather than passive.
