Husqvarna Norden 901 (2022+) Simplified Maintenance Schedule

This is the maintenance schedule and service intervals for the Husqvarna Norden 901, Husqvarna’s middleweight adventure bike released in 2022.

The Husqvarna Norden 901 is based on an 899 cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin with four valves per cylinder. It is tuned for midrange performance and makes 77 kW (105 hp) at 8000 rpm, with peak torque of 100 Nm (74 ft-lb) at 6500 rpm.

The engine is borrowed from the KTM 890 Adventure, with what appears to be the same tune, judging from the quoted specs.

Final drive is via a six-speed transmission and chain drive. So you’ll need to keep that chain clean!

Husqvarna Norden 901 Service Intervals

The Norden 901 has 9300 mile / 15000 km service or annual intervals. At every service, change the oil and filter, plus clean the oil screens. There’s also a long list of other checks to perform.

The major service interval for the Norden 901 is every 18600 miles or 30000 km, when you have to change the spark plugs and check / adjust the valve clearances.

You also need to change the front and rear brake fluid every 2 years, plus change the coolant every 4 years.

As the Norden 901 has a chain final drive, be sure to regularly clean and lube it.

Maintenance schedule

Below is the maintenance schedule for the Husqvarna Norden 901.

In the manual, they’ve separated the schedule into “required maintenance” and “recommended work”. However, most the items in the “recommended work” section are frequently required on motorcycles from other brands (like changing the coolant, checking the tightness of screws and nuts, etc).

So we’ve combined them into one schedule.

Below see the service schedule, as well as a list of maintenance items (a checklist for each service).

Chain maintenance

Maintaining the chain on the Husqvarna Norden 901 deserves its special section.

You need to service the Norden’s chain regularly, particularly as it’s an adventure motorcycle on which the chain is likely to get a lot of abuse. Use a good-quality and portable lubricant like Motul Chain Paste, which is highly regarded.

Chain maintenance itemEvery
Check the chain, rear sprocket, and engine sprocket

Check the chain tensionService

To check the chain tension on the Norden 901:

  1. Put the bike up on a centre stand (or raise up the rear somehow).
  2. Put the transmission into neutral.
  3. Find the chain sliding piece, and 2.5 cm past the end, push the chain up. Measure the distance from the flat part of the link fork directly above the chain to the chain. This is the chain tension slack, and it should be between 2-5mm.

Wheels, Tires, and Tire Pressures

The Husqvarna Norden 901 ships with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR adventure sport tires. The table below shows the standard tire sizes and recommended pressures.

About the Husqvarna Norden 901

2022 Husqvarna Norden 901 STatic 3

Husqvarna has built a lot of motorcycles based on KTM engine / chassis platforms. (KTM’s parent company, Pierer Mobility Group, also owns Husqvarna.)

But until recently, Husqvarna has mostly built dirt and enduro motorcycles, mostly based on KTM’s singles. So the Husqvarna Norden 901 is quite a revolutionary bike for the brand.

The Husqvarna Norden 901 is based heavily on the KTM 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R. The core is the same — a middleweight (not small, though not the biggest) adventure motorcycle that does everything, with a good amount of power, a lot of rider aids, decent comfort, but also enough weight to make very technical low-speed work potentially hairy compared to Husqvarna’s more focused offerings.

The core of the engine is the best bit. The 889cc parallel twin has a lot of character to it and a very wide operating range, with a big range of torque from down low to near the high redline (power peaks at 8000 rpm), if you want to take it there.

The Norden 901 also comes with all the ride aids you’d expect of a premium adventure bike — cornering ABS and TC, cruise control, and a quick shifter (“Easy Shift”). But heated grips are optional. And no, there’s no active suspension — that’s something that only the biggest class of motorcycles gets (for now).

For maintenance, the Husqvarna Norden 901 is set up to be relatively easy. One common complaint of adventure motorcycles is that it’s difficult to get to the air filter, which you have to service more often when riding in dust and rain. But the air filter is easy to get to on the Norden 901 — you just have to remove the seat.

The Norden has a 21/18-inch wire-spoked wheel setup with tubeless tires. Want tubes? Take one with you!
