BMW K 1300 S (2009-2015) Maintenance Schedule and Service Intervals

This is the maintenance schedule and service intervals for the BMW K 1300 S, BMW’s high-power sport tourer or hyperbike. It was made between model years 2009 and 2015.

The K 1300 S is also just known as the K1300S (no spaces). It’s one of the “K-Bikes”, BMW’s range of large-capacity sport/touring bikes with an inline engine (as opposed to a boxer engine, which dominates BMW’s history).

The BMW K 1300 S was released alongside the BMW K 1300 R and BMW K 1300 GT in 2008 for the 2009 model year.

The K 1300 S is based on a 1293cc inline four-cylinder engine. It’s liquid-cooled and fuel-injected. It makes peak power of 129 kW (175 hp) at 9250 rpm, and peak torque of 140 Nm (103 ft-lb) at 8250 rpm, making this a high speed and yet comfortable motorcycle.

The engine is mounted 55 degree forwards, keeping the bike’s center of gravity low.

The K 1300 S has BMW’s Duolever front suspension, optional electronic suspension (ESA II), and a shaft drive.

The K 1300 S was eventually discontinued, as people looking for fast bikes often turned to the much more modern BMW S 1000 RR.

BMW K 1300 S Service Intervals

Like many liquid-cooled BMW motorcycles, the BMW K 1300 S has 6000 mile / 10000 km service intervals, and annual inspections. At every service, change the oil and filter. And at every annual service, do a host of checks for leaks, fluid levels, and smooth and lubricated operation of all moving parts.

BMW recommends lubricating the drivetrain components every 12000 miles / 30000 km, and doing a major inspection (changing the spark plugs and checking valve clearances) every 30000 km.

Make sure you keep your coolant and brake fluid fresh according to the maintenance schedule too.

What you need to service your BMW K 1300 S

PartWhat to use on a K 1300 S
Engine oilUse SAE 5W-40 API SL or JASO MA2 engine oil without additives. BMW recommends BMW Motorrad Advantec Ultimate 5W-40 oil.
Oil filterChange the oil filter when you change the oil. BMW part number for the Mahle oil filter is 11 42 7 673 541, which needs an oil filter wrench. The Hiflofiltro HF164 is a high-quality alternative that fits many BMW motorcycles.
Air filterBMW part number for the air filter is 13 71 7 713 428. You can also use a DNA air filter, part number R-BM13S10-02.
Spark plugsUse an NGK KR9CI spark plugs.
Exhaust joint (ball joint) clamp lubricantBMW suggests you use Optimoly TA lubricant on the exhaust clamp.
Brake fluidUse BMW DOT 4 brake fluid.
Transmission fluidThe service manual (available as an interactive app) requires a hypoid lubricant of SAE 90 with API GL 5 spec. BMW dealers often recommend Castrol 75W-90 transmission oil.
CoolantUse BMW Coolant, which is based on ethylene glycol.

About the BMW K 1300 S

The BMW K 1300 S is BMW’s hyperbike or fast sport tourer bike. It was also the last of its kind (for a while) — nothing quite replaced it.

Yes, there was the K 1600 GT (which was sold alongside the K 1300 S), with a bigger engine, but there’s no “S” equivalent that’s a pure sport bike. The GT is heavier and more focused on touring, which is the reality of how a lot of people use their K bikes.

The BMW K 1300 S has left an indelible memory on BMW aficionados. It has a stomper of an engine — a 1293cc inline four-cylinder engine that makes a peak of 129 kW (173 bhp, 175 PS) at 9250 rpm, with peak torque of 140 Bm (103 ft-lb) at 8250 rpm.

So the K 1300 S likes to be revved. And it does so with gusto.

A few things distinguish the BMW K 1300 S from its most obvious competitors, the Kawasaki ZX-14R and the Suzuki Hayabusa Gen 2.

Firstly, the front suspension. The front isn’t a conventional inverted fork setup — it uses BMW’s Duolever suspension. It’s a bit love or hate. Lovers love the lack of dive in corners, but haters say it lacks feel. Either way, it’s unique.

Secondly, the forward leaning engine. These big bikes are all heavy. BMW alleviates the impact this has on the rider by tilting the cylinder block forward 55 degrees, to keep the center of gravity low. You can’t get rid of the weight, but you can hide it.

Third, a shaft drive. This means less maintenance, and fewer stops on long journeys (especially if you’ve ridden through rain and mud).

Fourth, electronic suspension adjustment. The K 1300 S had optional ESA II. You can set three preload settings and three damping settings per mode — a total of nine combinations.

Finally, a single sided swing-arm. Rare in the motorcycle world and almost unique in the hyperbike world — until the Kawasaki H2 SX brought it back.

So you can see that the K 1300 S may be a fast sport tourer, but it’s decidedly doing its own thing. Certainly something you’ll realise when it’s time to check the valves, though thankfully that’s only ever 30 000 km (18 000 mi).

Other than that, the K 1300 S gives you what you’d expect — a sumptuous ride from a smooth inline four-cylinder engine.

The K 1300 S is a distinct upgrade from the BMW K 1200 S that preceded it. They’re both great bikes, but the K 1300 S is more powerful and smoother at the same time. Plus the engine solves what some experienced as higher-than-expected oil consumption in the K 1200 S.

BMW K1300S
What about drive shaft spine lube? I’m getting a hard vibration in handle bars when decelerating at speeds of 50mph or higher. I would think spline lube would almost be associated with the differential maintenance. (Service Manager) thinks its the rear tire.I think he is disconnected from maintenance reality. What do you think?
